Exploring Performance Anxiety

Performance anxiety (or "stage fright" as it is often called) is a situation in which an individual becomes trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and expectations which lead to a negative physical response from the body which, in turn, leads to more negative thoughts and expectations. An individual's primary response to the discomfort of anxiety is to resist it. However, in resisting, the intensity of the anxiety often increases and becomes more unmanageable. The most effective way of dealing with performance anxiety is to face the symptoms and thoughts head-on and to exercise acceptance and forgiveness of oneself.

Participants in this workshop will examine the cause of the physical symptoms of performance anxiety, what those sypmtoms really mean, and how to face them in a healthy, positive way that not only allows relief, but over time, can reduce the incidence and severity of anxiety in most people.

While this workshop is designed primarily for musicians, it may be applied to anyone who regularly leads or speaks in public, such as teachers or business people.
